Whitman's Faculty
Section Navigation
A history professor whose views on the Iraq situation are quoted by The New York Times; a physics professor who creates a new device to help undergraduate students conduct experiments in quantum mechanics; an astronomy professor who volunteers countless hours at the on-campus planetarium to help local school children explore the wonders of the solar system: As a Whitman student, you'll be inspired by the depth of knowledge, the breadth of interests, and the scholarly and creative achievements of the professors.
Dedicated teachers. Our full-time faculty comprises 120 dynamic and experienced professors. While many of them have earned national recognition for their scholarship, what truly sets them apart is their passion for teaching and mentoring their students. A student-faculty ratio of 9 to 1, an average class size of 15, and the fact that most Whitman faculty live in neighborhoods close to campus mean that as a Whitman student, you'll develop deep and productive intellectual and 专业 relationships with your professors. You'll not only interact closely with them in the classroom, or work with them on real-world research projects, or accompany them on exciting study-abroad trips around the world. You'll also find them conducting late-night exam review sessions on campus, attending plays at Harper Joy 剧院, and at sporting and other social events on and off campus.
Renowned scholars. They are accessible, supportive, and involved. They are dedicated mentors. But as a student here, you'll quickly discover that Whitman professors are also uncompromising when it comes to academic rigor. They create an environment that encourages you to ask questions, to take intellectual risks, to pursue new insights and make new connections, often across disciplines. But they also demand 100 percent commitment and dedication to scholarship of the highest quality–both from their students as well as from themselves. This is one reason why they also continue to develop their own research, 专业, and pedagogical skills through the discussions, 讲座, 研讨会, and seminars organized at Whitman's Center for Teaching and Learning.
